A vegan and gluten-free diet may protect be beneficial for the heart in people with rheumatoid arthritis, Swedish researchers report.
In 66 patients, randomised to a vegan diet without gluten or a balanced normal diet for a year, researchers found the diet was associated with lower levels of LDL cholesterol.
The vegan volunteers also had a lower BMI at the end of the 12-month period and raised levels of some anti-inflammatory markers.
Arthritis Research & Therapy | Abstract | ar2388 | Gluten-free vegan diet induces decreased LDL and oxidized LDL levels and raised atheroprotective natural antibodies against phosphorylcholine in patients with rheumatoid arthritis: a randomized: "A gluten-free vegan diet in RA induces changes that are potentially atheroprotective and anti-inflammatory, including decreased LDL and oxLDL levels and raised anti-PC IgM and IgA levels."
