Official: Soldier Said He Wanted To Attack Fort Hood Troops -- CNN

Killeen, Texas (CNN) -- An AWOL Muslim American Army private arrested near Fort Hood has told investigators that he wanted to attack fellow soldiers at the military base, the police chief in Killeen, Texas, said Thursday.

"Military personnel were a target of this suspect," Chief Dennis Baldwin told reporters about Pfc. Naser Jason Abdo, who is expected to face federal charges. Baldwin said Abdo, who was arrested Wednesday, had no accomplices, "as far as I know."

He added, "We are not aware of any additional threats to the safety of our community."

A Strange Arrest In A New Alleged Fort Hood Attack Plot -- Time

The immediate reaction from a lot of people when news first broke that a soldier shot up the Soldier Readiness Center at Fort Hood in November 2009 was surprise that this kind of thing had not happened earlier. Many folks (including me) first assumed that this was the act of a soldier suffering greatly from combat stress after repeated combat tours who felt like he was not getting the help he deserved after his return. I've met a lot of soldiers who were so stressed under those conditions that they seemed capable of that kind of thing.

Congressional Report: 40 Americans Training in Somalia Are 'Direct Threat' to U.S. -- ABC News

A new congressional report today expressed increasing alarm on the danger posed by Americans of Somali background who have joined Islamic militants, calling them a "direct threat to the U.S. homeland."
