1 in 96 chance of getting pregnant says study

Diposkan oleh Unknown on Monday, August 23, 2010

The average couple has sex 96 times to get pregnant a new study by First Response has revealed.

It takes a woman just six months to conceive her first child, but is having to ‘do the deed’ over four times a week. The poll of 3000 mothers was commissioned by family planning brand First Response which also revealed that two thirds of women conceived much quicker than they expected.

One in 10 women have been so eager to get pregnant they have called their husband home from work when they were ovulating. And a further, pushy 10 per cent said they then jumped on their other half as soon as he walked through the door.

Despite this, 70 per cent of those polled said they wanted their baby to be conceived during a loving and spontaneous sex session rather than going through the mechanics. In order to woo their other half, a persistent 35 per cent of girls said they made more effort to look sexy when trying for a baby.

But it’s not all fun and games - nearly a quarter of women admitted that sex got really boring when trying to start a family, while 11 per cent of men complained at the amount of sex their wife or girlfriend was demanding and admitted to feeling completely used.

First Response said: ‘’Having sex 96 times before falling pregnant does sound rather a lot, but as they say practice makes perfect. However, for those not trying to conceive it’s very important to remember that many couples may also fall pregnant first time so if you are not trying for a baby please still use the necessary precautions.‘’Trying for a baby is a very exciting time for a couple and many try to have sex at every opportunity in order to get pregnant. Couples who are having problems conceiving can visit www.tellsyoufirst.co.uk for practical expert advice and handy tools by London Nutritionist Yvonne Bishop-Weston to help set you on the right path

Some women are so eager to find out the happy news more than one in 20 women did a pregnancy test in work and four per cent used a testing kit in the public toilets at the shops.

First Response spokesperson added: ‘’It’s an extremely anxious time and many women want to find out whether they are expecting a child as soon as possible.”

The First Response Early Results Pregnancy Test is the only test in the UK that can accurately let you know if you’re pregnant up to six days before a missed period - two days before other at-home tests. This test is accurate and simple to use and the sooner you discover you are pregnant, the sooner you can begin to make the lifestyle changes required to give you the best head start to a healthy and happy pregnancy.

Another big surprise was that as much as nearly one in 10 females told their parents before telling their partner that they were expecting a child.

Chemicals linked with reduced fertility

Food packaging chemicals link with reduced fertility - Times Online

fertility and chemical pollution

"Mark Henderson, Science Editor - Chemicals found in food packaging, pesticides and household items may be linked to lower fertility among women, new research has suggested.

A study of 1,240 women has found that those with higher levels of perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) in their bloodstreams tend to take longer to become pregnant than those with lower levels.

The findings, from scientists at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), raise the prospect that exposure to the chemicals could be contributing to infertility. The study is published in the journal Human Reproduction."

Yvonne Bishop-Weston Fertity Expert says - "These findings, although welcomed extra evidence, are not 'news' to the experts that work in the field of natural fertility and pre-conceptual care. One study of samples of blood and urine taken from volunteers(a) found 171 industrial pollutants including chemicals with possible links to birth defects and developmental delays, immune system toxicity with an average of 56 carcinogens

A major concern is Phthalates found in personal care products such as nail polish, cosmetics, soap and shampoo which could have profound estrogenic effects and affect fertility. It's thought by some there is no safe level. A few leading lights such as Lush Cosmetics, Green People and Yaoh are seeking to banish or minimalise these and similar chemicals but overall few manufacturers are acting as responsibly.

Levels of pollutants have allegedly previously been found in Sea Mammals that would apparently qualify their bodies as hazardous toxic waste - which if, as suspected, the problem is widespread there is then a very good argument for eating as low down the food chain as often as possible.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) is another concern. In one study, as long ago as 1994, it was estimated that 97% of our daily intake of PCB's came from food with 71% coming from saturated fat rich animal products such as meat and dairy

* Foods for Life nutritionists recommend women planning a family avoid fish or only small amounts of oily fish lower down the food chain food small - instead recommend brain boosting and cell protecting omega 3 fats from carefully purified fish oil or better still from sustainably sourced natural Algae products.

* Yvonne Bishop-Weston's First response 'Eat Right to Conceive' food wheel plate already considers all these problems. It assists expectant mothers in making informed choices to reduce saturated animal fat in the diet - instead gleaning essential plant based fats from a more plant orientated nutrient rich diet - helping to reduce your risk from these potential harmful agents

* A Foresight Preconceptual Care Study showed that nutritional therapy can be over three times more effective at assisting with conception (healthy baby born)than traditional methods such as IVF in couples diagnosed as infertile

Croydon Nutritionist Wins TV Fertility Baby Race

Optimum Nutritionists Winning Natural Fertility Program

The GMTV LK Today show on ITV Television (wednesday 18th July) followed a TV competition between three couple's and their therapists in a race to get pregnant. One couple were being helped by an accupuncturist, one couple followed an IVF program a third couple embarked on a natural fertility nutrition program - it was the couple with the improved diet that won.

Croydon Nutrition therapist and fertility expert Yvonne Bishop-Weston from Foods for Life provided the couple who were using natural nutrition with the winning fertility program.

Yvonne reveals that nutrition therapy is by far the most effective in most cases of infertility with claims as high as an 80% success rate.

She says "The best thing about natural fertility nutrition therapy is that their are no negative side effects. Some of the drugs and hormones used in assisted conception techniques can make patients feel quite ill and stressed. Not only are the odds of pregnancy much higher with nutrition therapy but the potential side effects are all positive things such as balanced weight, more energy, better skin, better mood, and a healthier baby."

Costly fertility treatment may reduce births - sex - 04 July 2007 - New Scientist

Science seems to be going backwards on fertility treatments.

Harley Street Fertility and Nutrition Expert onGMTV's, baby race Yvonne Bishop-Weston says that a new fertility treatment that costs thousands of pounds extra to the many thousands of pounds it already costs for IVF may actually reduce women's chances of having a healthy baby.

Pre-implantation genetic screening (PGS) involves removing one or two cells from the embryo three days after fertilisation.

Sebastiaan Mastenbroek, at the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands, and colleagues compared 408 women aged 35 to 41 who were undergoing IVF. Of these, 206 were given PGS.

Twelve weeks after the treatment, 25% of the women in the PGS group were pregnant, compared with 37% of the women whose embryos were selected by the standard method – a visual inspection. The difference in outcomes was the similar when live births were considered.

"The goal of PGS is to increase pregnancy rates, but we found that it actually decreases it," says Mastenbroek, who presented the results at a meeting of the European Society for Human Reproduction and Embryology in Lyon, France.

Bishop-Weston says that Doctors are often "over complicating matters". She believes that a woman's body often needs to be sure it has sufficient stores of nutrients to sustain nine months of pregnancy and have a good chance of a healthy baby at the end of it to make the whole thing worth the gamble and effort. Frequently it's the bad diet of the men that are thwarting a couples' chances of conception. Men's sperm have to go through a decathlon of olympic proportions to increase the odds that only the fittest, strongest and best looking sperm have a chance at making a baby. Modern diets and lifestyles often result in men's sperm being mutated, unfit, and in short supply.

Modern medical methods risk side-stepping the safeguards that nature puts in place to produce an optimally healthy baby - the quality of health of the baby is often overlooked in the obcession to merely create life at any cost as private fertility clinics play God.

Bishop-Weston says "It's frequently hard to get the men to take responsibility for the health of their contribution to making babies - especially when they are told that things such as their coffee and alcohol consumption could be having a profound effect on their potential fatherhood and the health of any children"

Research shows that Nutrition therapy can be many times more effective than expensive IVF fertility treatments and assisted conception methods.Foresight The Preconceptual Charity claim 78.4% of 'Infertile' couples have healthy babies compared with 22.6% with IVF.

A challenge on ITV breakfast TV seems to have confirmed these statistics.

Yvonne Bishop-Weston, and the couple she provided nutritional advice for, recently won the GMTV Baby Race on LK Today (despite being told by their doctor they were infertile). The man involved lost 2 stone and saw a vast improvement in the quality of his sperm. His wife saw her hormone levels stabilise and found a new lease of life, as well as getting pregnant and despite the very poor NHS odds of success. They beat the other 2 couples, one who were using acupuncture and the other using IVF.

For difficult cases Foods for Life have a team of 2 herbalists, an acupuncturist and even a hypnotist to complement the nutritionists' skills in optimising bodies, making them fertile enough to make a healthy baby.

Two studies one measuring the 'Effectiveness of Chinese Herbal Medicine in Improving Infertility (Wing & Sedlmeier)', showed that Chinese herbal medicine, when prescribed correctly, actually increases fertility - 56% of the sample group were pregnant within six months of starting their final treatment. Another, The German Study on Acupuncture and ART (Paulus, Zhang, Strehler, El-Danasouri and Sterzik), demonstrated that acupuncture improved pregnancy rates during IVF - with 42% of the acupuncture group pregnant within six weeks, compared to 21% of the control group.

Preconception.com Organic Conception Using Nature to Boost Your Fertility: "'Over 15 percent of couples in the U.S. have difficulty conceiving a child,' "

fertility improved, infertility helped by better nutrition and avoiding toxins say Foods For Life

A spokesperson for London Nutritionists Foods For Life has dismissed The recent health scares about infertility and IVF treatment as a moneymaking smokescreen by fertility ‘experts’.

Yvonne Bishop-Weston, London nutrition expert says “there’s no doubt the UK health service have a poor record on assisted pregnancy but the real tragedy is that very many cases of infertility can be helped simply by better health and nutrition.”

Fertility - barometer for health

Even with IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation) it’s very difficult to stay pregnant if your body hasn’t been nutritionally nurtured. The body is very good at deciding that all those nine months of effort just aren’t worth it. If you are not feeding yourself right, scoffing little but sugar and saturated fat and artificially stimulating yourself with caffeine instead of food then what chance has the baby got to grow into a healthy adult?

Of course sometimes it’s more complicated than stupified, drugged, poisoned, malnourished sperm or poisoned eggs lacking essential amino acids and omega fats but even in these cases optimum nutrition is often even more important to avoid IVF being a waste of time and money.

The main problem is that showing people why they should avoid coffee and eat more broccoli and hempseeds is not nearly as profitable as complicated medical procedures and selling rigorously tested, expensive, patented drugs.

Expensive addictions

Some people would rather pay thousands of pounds on pills and surgery rather than ditch the morning espresso and give up the cigarettes and five bottles of chardonnay a week. They don’t want the extra personal responsibility. They already have enough stress in their lives which is often at the root of the problem and it’s easier to delegate to an ‘expert’.

Over 1% of births artificially ‘assisted’

The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) published a guide that indicates that 8,800 babies (1.5% of all births) are now born every year by IVF, 3650 every year are born by intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), and many more thorough other Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART), underlining how successful the treatment has become since it was first pioneered in Britain in 1978.

Causes of infertility

In 1992, The British Medical Journal reviewed 61 separate studies and concluded there had been an average 42 per cent fall in sperm count from 113 million per millilitre in 1940 to 66 million. Sperm counts under 20 million per millilitre point to infertility and, under 5 million, sterility.

Some researchers are looking at the root cause of infertility rather than lucrative quick fix methods but funding is tight. CHAPS the Chemicals And Pregnancy Study is looking into whether workplace chemicals and toxins are to blame for problems with fertility.

Copper maybe an issue. Although copper is an essential element, an excessive amount is toxic. The symptoms of copper poisoning, which are frequently associated with suicidal intent, are clearly documented including: nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, hypotension, jaundice, haematuria, anuria, coma and death. One of the most prominent sources of copper comes from our drinking water supplies running through copper piping. Particularly in areas where the water is soft and acidic, as this literally corrodes layers of copper off the pipes. Cigarette smoking is also a prominent source of excessive copper accumulation Similarly oral contraceptives are notorious in raising the body's copper burden. (Foresight)

Nutrition Solutions

London Nutritionist Yvonne Bishop-Weston works with Foresight the charity for preconceptual care, fertility and pregnancy. Foresight help hundreds of couples every year to have healthy babies.

Yvonne reveals some interesting statistics “Foresight has shown that Nutritional Therapy can double the success rate of babies born to couples with infertility issues. Foresight therapies achieve 72% success rate of healthy babies born whilst the success rate for assisted conception is only 30-47%.

Tony Bishop-weston says “That could mean that over half the people paying for IVF are wasting their money and many of the others may have been able to save themselves re-mortgaging their house by visiting a Foresight practitioner.”

Of course you could go to Bombay, India where IVF can cost as little as UK£1,500.

In the UK IVF could cost well over £5,000, plus the cost of scans, drugs and don’t lose your notes as it may cost you over £30 for another set.

Optimum Nutrition still looks the best value for money in the first instance.
