This year, tobacco will kill almost 6 million people, including 600,000 non-smokers because governments aren't taking enough action to encourage people to stop smoking or prevent others from being exposed to second-hand smoke.
These are the latest warnings from the World Health Organization (WHO), which has also revealed that by 2030, around 8 million people will be dying from smoking-related causes every single year.
Due to the delay between the time when people start smoking and the point when it actually affects their health, the epidemic of tobacco-related problems and deaths has only just started.
Tobacco is described by the WHO as "one of the biggest public health threats the world has ever faced" and kills up to half its users. It causes a range of chronic respiratory diseases, including lung cancer, which is often fatal. It is also a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, the world's number one killer.
One of the most effective options available to smokers, in terms of eliminating second-hand smoke and avoiding exposure to the most harmful substances in traditional tobacco (smoke, tar, ash, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, arsenic), are electronic cigarettes.
By using liquid nicotine and a harmless water vapour, the devices cater for cravings and the hand-to-mouth habit, while offering a way to avoid all the dangers of normal cigarettes and even become completely nicotine-free (with nicotine-free cartridges). They work by using a battery which powers an atomiser, which then heats the liquid nicotine, enabling it to be inhaled and exhaled along with the water vapour, to produce a harmless 'smoke'.
